ARVAGH

Type: Private Residential

Status: Tender 2019

Location: Co. Cavan

The design for this one-off rural dwelling for a growing young family stems from a keen interest in both vernacular farmhouse and tower house typologies. The north and east walls are conceived as thick and inhabited while the south and west walls open up to light and the spectacular views over the Cavan hills. Working spaces and bedrooms are arranged to make best use of diffuse, utilitarian light while the generous dining and living spaces make the most of their south-westerly aspect for use throughout the afternoon and evening. The pitched forms and materials draw from the strong tradition of agricultural development in the area. Corrugated sheet metal, slurry rendered masonry and hardwoods are selected for their durability and rural aesthetic qualities. The detailed design pack is well underway, including a robust conservation of energy strategy to satisfy the requirements of the recently published nZEB regulations.
