A proposed extension to a typical Connemara cottage to make way for modern family life, and capture the vies of Galway bay. The proposal works with the historic grain of the local site layouts to elongate the home, with views oriented to the Galway bay islands and across to Co. Clare. A play on the local vernacular agricultural buildings, a strong roof-form with robust materiality beneath will allow a contemporary but familiar addition to the locality. The sites thick tree-growth will nestle around the proposal while allowing a tranquil outhouse space intentionally divorced from the encompassing views. A robust conservation of energy strategy will be a priority in this design to ensure, not only compliance with the recently published nZEB regulations, but a home that will last through the generations for this family.
