A project to greatly increase the area of a unique farm house for three generations of the same family. The key challenge was to strike a balance between a sense of communal living and separation for privacy within the fabric of the original house, while expanding the more private areas beyond the footprint of the original structure. Three distinct forms emerge to the east and west to house additional kitchens, dining areas, and more utilitarian spaces including a covered garage, home office, gym and wash room. The roof forms give the additions a distinct character and draw light into the plan from above, generous areas of glazing are broken down with timber pilasters and rough cast renders provide a robust exterior. Interiors are conceived as large, but zoned, volumes again drawing on ideas of community and privacy.
